Ghost in the Machine, Curated by Stephen Westfall at Lennon, Weinberg

James Kalm pops in to catch the last ten minutes of this opening. "Ghost in the Machine" presents Westfall's curatorial notion of "animus geometry", a type of hard edge painting that maintains some sense of animation or wit. Artists in this show represent four generations of abstraction and several directions of investigation within this genera. Includes views of works by: John McLaughlin, Nicholas Krushenick, Don Christensen, Harriet Korman, Don Voisine, Jennifer Riley, Jackie Meier, Thomas Raggio, sculptor Rachel Beach and a brief interview with curator Stephen Westfall.

Monday Artist at Noon: Sarah Crowner Monday, September 27, Noon Brown Center: Falvey Hall, 1301 W. Mount Royal Ave. Both A painter and ceramics artist, Sarah Crowner might be considered more of a sculptor. She creates her paintings by physically sewing together sections of painted canvas to form angular, geometric works that "evoke the style of hard-edge paintings of the 1950s and 1960s," according to the Whitney Biennial catalogue, which featured her participation in the 2010 show. "With its associations of domestic labor, the act of sewing also confronts the high seriousness of abstract painting with the unpretentious tradition of craft." Crowner attended Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France, and has had residencies in Greece and Portugal, as well as at Hunter College, City University of New York. She will talk about her interdisciplinary approaches to art.
